Inside Information: What Our Poop Is Telling Us

Have you ever taken a quick look into the toilet after you’ve done your duty? Surprised by the color of your poop and exclaimed, “what the..?!!”  Or even wondered where that smell is coming from and if it was because you had something spicy the evening before? Do we actually know what our poop is telling us?

Our poop is one of the key indicators of the health of our digestive system. Did you know that our digestive system functions more than just digesting the meals you have? It plays as one of our first lines of defense for our body. About 70% of our immune system happens to come from our digestive system.

Our gut health is also directly related to our brain health. Our gut is our second brain, and literally connected to our brain through the vagus nerve. Furthermore, 95% of serotonin, the happy hormone, is produced in the gut!

Not only that, many of women’s hormones are dependent on a healthy gut microbiome. The health of our skin, eyes, hair, and even how we metabolize carbohydrates all stem from the condition of our gut. So why aren’t we taking more notice of our bowel movements?

Doctor’s Review on Poop

Panic-buying toilet paper during coronavirus epidemic

We have incorporated many research findings regarding digestive health and gut microbiome into our FindYourFierce Programs. We also have found other resources very helpful in explaining why we should be taking our poop seriously, and finding out what our poop is telling us.

Dr. Will Bulsiewicz MD, (or Dr. B  @IG”theguthealthmd) has a book called Fiber Fueled. As a gastroenterologist and gut health expert, he writes his book as an interesting read and has lots of information on how eating more plant-based meals can help reverse digestive and immune health. Here are our favorite quotes from Dr. B regarding the gut, microbiome, and poop, taken from Eat plants. Have Epic Dumps. (Spotify interview on Party in My Plants Podcast, Ep#88)

  • Eat plants. Have Epic Dumps
  • 60 percent of the weight of a bowel movement is bacteria from your gut, it’s not the food that you ate.
  • Normal bowel movement should be 2-3 times a day
  • We should be having a bowel movement with every single meal
  • How to build a healthy gut? It’s including fiber in our diet.
  • Out gut is like a muscle.. there is such a thing as too much too fast when your body isn’t prepared for what you’re going to do..you’ve got to ease in with fiber.

What our Poop is Telling Us

Based on Dr. B’s program, we share here his fun notes on what our poop color tells us.  He believes it’s a window into the health of our gut microbiota.

Imagine If

Now that we’ve got an overview of what our poop is telling us, don’t be afraid to inspect it! So what can we do and keep up with all that sh-t? Having a diversity of plants in our diet greatly improves the health of our gut microbiome. Consuming about 30+ different plant-based food in a week can help boost healthier bacteria in the gut.

Imagine healing yourself, healing your gut, improving your moods and brain health, boosting your immune system, managing stress better, and at the same time rebalancing your hormones by simply adding a variety of plant-based food to your diet. Wouldn’t that lead you to feel better, physically and mentally? Constipation, IBS, be gone!

Healthy Gut = Healthy Poop = Happy and Healthy You!
