Here at FYFG, we incorporate the principle of Healthy Gut = Healthy Brain, in our wellness programs. We recently had an article about how our Gut and Brain communicate. We believe the best way to begin to think and feel better is through the gut. And it’s by consuming foods for a healthy brain.
There have been much scientific research and clinical studies proving that what we eat has a long-term impact on the health of our gut and the health of our brain. Coaches Mia and Bunny share their Top 3 Brain-Boosting Foods.
Coach Bunny’s Top 3 Foods for a Healthy Brain
- Nuts and Seeds. The nutrient Omega 3 is found in nuts and seeds, for example, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts. Most of the Omega-3 sources are from plants and add to our daily fiber requirement. Many of these nuts and seeds are high in micronutrients that are needed by our brain. For instance, minerals like magnesium, zinc, iron. Low magnesium levels have been found to cause depression, irritability, and anxiety. Iron deficiency, on the other hand, has been found to lead to brain fog. Coach Bunny adds these in salads, on her breakfast bowls, and even in her healthy baked goodies.
- Dark Chocolate*. (Yup! Coach Bunny loves dark chocolate!) Dark Chocolate and natural cacao nibs, are packed with flavonoids, antioxidants, and caffeine. Consuming just 1 square inch of dark chocolate can bring enough antioxidants to help with boosting brain memory. In addition, it has been found that dark chocolate’s effect on the brain’s dopamine hormone helps with boosting better mood and positive feelings. Equally important, the flavonoids in chocolate have been found to help with learning and memory. (*Consume in moderation, not a whole chocolate bar in one sitting.)
- Brocolli. Brocolli is almost in all meals in Coach Bunny’s home. It’s one of her ‘staples’ and her kids enjoy it, thankfully! Brocolli has been found to contain enzymes that are cancer-fighting. Moreover, it also contains high-fiber that our gut microbiome needs to proliferate and grow. Additionally, Vitamin K is also found in broccoli and is considered an excellent source for a healthy brain.

- Fatty Fish. Omega 3 is found in Fatty fish, for example, salmon, sardines, cod, and other deep-sea fish. It is an essential fatty acid. Much of our brain (60%+) is made of fat, and about half of that is of the Omega-3 type. Therefore, Omega-3 is vital for the growth of a fetus’ brain health. Furthermore, our brain uses Omega-3 to build brain cells and nerves, and essential for learning and memory. Studies have shown that Omega-3 helps with maintaining a good gut microbiome.
- Oranges. Coach Mia enjoys fruit in her daily salad dishes, and Oranges are one of them. They are rich in Vitamin C antioxidants that fight off free radicals that can damage the brain. So, having a medium orange daily can greatly help in boosting your immune system as well as supporting brain health. Furthermore, oranges are a delicious way to increase dietary healthy fiber for your gut microbiome!
- Yerba Mate (yerba–maté). Yerba Mate comes from the naturally caffeinated leaves of a native species of a holly tree, Ilex Paraguariensis, found deep in the South American Atlantic rainforest. Coach Mia enjoys this through Unicity’s UniMate supplement drink., daily! This drink has wonderful effects on one’s mood, mainly because of its powerful antioxidants and theobromine elements. Theobromine has been found to help in blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, blood fat (triglycerides and LDL), and helps with cognitive function. Furthermore, Yerba Mate has been found to help in gut health and may prevent bacteria, intestinal parasites, and fungi.

Imagine if
Imagine having a diversity of whole foods — lean protein, fiber-rich plants of fruits and vegetables and grains–that actually help heal your brain through your gut. Many of the foods we eat serve as ‘information’ to our body especially to our brain. We cannot keep consuming processed, chemically-laden food and drugs for long periods of time. Even though it may take several years before we see ourselves with cognitive dysfunction, it is never too late to shift to healing ourselves by eating whole, natural foods that help our gut and our brain. Mood disorders, anxiety, and depression are clear signs that gut health has reached its limit of poor health. Let’s not wait to get to this point. After all, we want to live a long, happy, healthy, and FIERCE life with our loved ones!
